David’s Story

“I lost my job and was on welfare. I didn’t have any direction for my life.”

David moved to Edmonton to start over. He knew he needed to ask for help. David joined Breakout, Hope Mission’s year-long addiction recovery program for men.

“Since joining Breakout, I’m more proactive. I’m happy being sober. I’m happy with who I’ve become.”

David benefited so greatly from the life changing care he received at Hope Mission. Now he is full of new hope and new goals.

“Your support has allowed me to be here so I could regrow. I’m looking forward to having a normal life and seeing where it takes me. Thank you.”

Cameron’s Story

As a child, Cameron didn’t see his father much — he was constantly in and out of prison. When Cameron became a father as a teenager, he supported them the only way he knew how: by selling drugs. He ended up in a cycle of addiction and crime and just like his father, spent many years behind bars.

“No treatment centre’s would accept me because of my violent criminal record and history. I called my sister, desperate for help. She told me that Hope Mission might be able to help — and I started making my way to the Herb Jamieson Centre.”

Here at the old Herb Jamieson Centre, Cameron joined Breakout, our recovery program for men. For the first time in Cameron’s life, he had hope for a better future and a support network of people who cared about him.

It’s been over five years since Cameron graduated from our program and his life has completely turned around. This past year, his story came full circle when he ended up helping rebuild the new Herb Jamieson Centre — the same place that rebuilt his life.

“His building is going to help thousands and thousands of men. And not just men, but women, kids, teenagers — entire families that have been pulled apart will find restoration.“

Rory’s Story

After years of growing up with an alcoholic father and grandfather, Rory eventually found himself caught in the same addiction. His drinking continued to spiral out of control and after burning all his bridges with friends and family, Rory ended up homeless and with nowhere to go.

“I had absolutely no place to go. I was at the ultimate rock bottom in my life.”

“I finally decided I needed some help and put myself into a detox facility and then I would look into getting into a program right after.”

Rory spent a Christmas in detox and began his search for programs that could offer further help. Hope Mission ended up being the first place that opened the doors to Rory. He found out that they had a year-long addictions recovery program and a plan for him to transition into housing after the program. Rory caught the first shuttle to Edmonton and his life has never been the same since.

“I am very thankful for Hope Mission and what they did for me through the breakout program.”

Since coming to Hope Mission, Rory’s life has been forever changed. As he looks forward to graduation and a new beginning, Rory is thankful to be putting his life in God’s hands.

“I’ve worked in the kitchen during my time in the program and to see the amount of people that they feed — it’s incredible. I would have never thought there were places that do this much.”

Mike’s Story

Mike worked in the trades as a pipefitter for years. After experimenting with drugs, he fell into full-blown addiction. His life spiraled out of control: he lost his job, home, his membership in the union and crashed his car. Homeless, he stayed at a friend’s house — still using. After a month of heavy drug use, Mike’s friend refused to let him stay any longer and dropped him off at the Hope Mission.

“I remember saying to one of the staff, ‘I don’t think I should be here.'”

Mike had lost everything. He was at his lowest point, and the desperate reality of his situation became clear to him. He found himself in an area where the deep pain of addiction and hopelessness is obvious and widespread. It opened his eyes to the choice he had to make.

“You can see how detrimental to your future addiction can be.”

Mike knew he had to make a change. Thankfully, he met one of the Hope Mission staff and shared his desire to get clean. A staff member told Mike about the Breakout Program, Hope Mission’s recovery program for men. After several calls, the next day he was introduced to the Breakout Staff and was accepted into the program.

“Honestly, my life is so different from six months ago.”

Mike’s journey in recovery hasn’t been easy — he relapsed twice in his first month in the program. But he picked himself back up, and made a commitment to sobriety. He has now been clean and sober for five months.

“The faith aspect of the program — it’s been life-changing — it’s opened my eyes, that there’s something more important than just coasting through life.”

Mike credits Hope Mission’s Breakout Program for saving his life and keeping him clean by introducing him to a newfound faith and appreciation for the gospel.

“The staff are extremely involved, they’re really caring, more like friends, not just teachers or someone just coming to work.”

Not only has the faith element of the program been helpful to Mike’s recovery, but the care the staff have shown him has been incredibly impactful throughout his journey in sobriety. He can’t stress enough the inspiration he finds in observing how positively the staff go about their work, interacting with the people in the recovery program in a genuine way.

“To see those who’ve come through the program and are now working here and still doing well is inspiring.” “

There are staff who were once like Mike, stuck in addiction, now thriving as they help others in their journey to recovery, which speaks to Mike’s desire to serve. Their dedication and passion to serve others has inspired him to look to his future, and the ways he too can serve others.

“I’ve gone through a huge change from where I was. Right now, i have no desire to go back to drugs. i want to do something with my life, to be something for my kids.”

The Breakout Program’s impact on his life isn’t lost on Mike. His outlook on life and priorities have dramatically shifted since joining the program. He wants to do something with his life — to help others and be the best father he can be for his kids.

“I’m very lucky I ended up at Hope Mission, Because I wouldn’t be here otherwise.”

For Mike, his time at Hope Mission has been one of reflection and growing in his sobriety. He recognizes where he might have ended up if he hadn’t found help in time.

When asked what he would like to say to people who support Hope Mission through prayer, donations and volunteering he had this to say:

“Thank you wouldn’t even be the proper words for our supporters.”

“They provide for people like me, who need Hope mission’s programs and services — it saves lives. God Bless them!”

Bonita’s Story

“I came to Hope Mission when I was down on my luck…as far down as I could get.”

After Bonita was evicted from her home she didn’t know where to go. In her desperation, she discovered that there was a place that could offer her meals, shelter, and hope. Bonita eventually found her way to Hope Mission.

“They welcomed me in and made me feel like there was hope.”

Since the first day Bonita came to Hope Mission, she has been finding healing and hope through meals, shelter, and the smiles of friendly volunteers and staff. Bonita recently attended one of our special holiday banquets and it meant so much to her.

“For me, it was like a shelter from a terrible storm. Here we have shelter. Here we have three meals a day. Here we have a chance to move forward.”

At Hope Mission we believe that hope begins with a meal. And this Christmas, you can give the gift of hope by providing meals and care to those in need.

“I came here broken…And now I’m healing and I’m doing well. Thank you from all of us!”

Jacinta’s Story

“I was a person to just accept offers thinking nothing is going to happen to me — but really, on the inside of my body I was crying for help.”

At the age of sixteen, Jacinta’s life took a turn as she began experimenting with drugs and alcohol. After getting kicked out of school and not finding any other schools that would accept her, Jacinta’s childhood dream of becoming a nurse practitioner began to fade away. Eventually, Jacinta’s addiction led her to homelessness. In the winter she would couch surf — but that never felt safe. As soon as it was warm enough, she would set up her tent on the outskirts of Edmonton.

“In that kind of life, you’ve got to be tough.”

Jacinta would occasionally make trips back to her reserve to spend time there. One time while she was at her reserve, she was sitting in church praying to God and asking him for help so that she could escape this life of drugs and addiction. Right in that moment, God sent someone who encouraged Jacinta to join him for AA meetings.

After going to some AA meetings, Jacinta had a conversation with her chief about how she really wanted to quit. He encouraged her to pray and ask God for help. It wasn’t long after this conversation that Jacinta took the steps that led her to Hope Mission’s Wellspring Program.

“I’m very proud of myself. I feel so much of a woman — a strong, native woman who just wants to make something better for her life, kids, and people back home.”

By the grace of God, Jacinta is now ten months sober and in the final phase of Hope Mission’s one-year recovery program for women. Soon, she hopes to pursue her childhood dreams of becoming a nurse practitioner — an opportunity for her to give back and spread love to the community.

For Jacinta, access to safe shelter and meals were a core part of her recovery — especially the special holiday meals that made her feel at home and gave her hope to keep pushing forward. Today, Jacinta has hope for a better future.

“Hope Mission has changed me. It gave me a shelter to live in. It gave me a place to redeem myself. The meals there are really appreciated — because it got me through to where I am today. If it weren’t for them to cook the way they do, I don’t think anyone would survive the street.”

Stephen’s Story

“This is the longest time ever that I have been without drinking.”

When Stephen first joined Breakout — Hope Mission’s year-long addiction recovery program for men — it was the beginning of a beautiful story of transformation and hope.

“As I’ve been able to bring up things that were buried…I’ve experienced a lot of forgiveness.”

This program gave Stephen the chance to build a routine and personal structure — all while working through the deep challenges he has faced in his life. Today, he is sober and full of new life and hope.

“You have no idea how important your gift really is. I know it’s hard to see how the money you give is used. Well, I’m living proof on how part of it is used. Thank you very much!”

Debbie’s Story

After Debbie’s husband passed away in his 40’s, her destructive addiction to alcohol began to consume her life. Recovery programs only helped short-term. She was stuck in the cycle of addiction and battling periods of homelessness.

“I went through the whole thing—eviction, being homeless, finding a place, getting bored, going to treatment, staying sober for a couple of months, and then starting to drink again.”

Left with no hope, Debbie cried out to God, asking Him to provide a way out of her toxic lifestyle.

“I said, “God, I said you gotta help me here!” I wasn’t ever a ‘God person’ I just said, “God, it’s either I’m going to kill myself, or you’re going to help me somehow!”

That’s when Debbie miraculously stumbled upon Wellspring—and was in the program just two weeks later! Now, Debbie has found God’s help at Hope Mission. She finally has peace in her heart.

“I’ve gone to almost all the programs out there. The missing factor was the God factor.”

Your generosity continues to make space for people like Debbie to be welcomed quickly into a community that will feed them healthy meals, share the Gospel of peace, and give them tools for long-term recovery.

“I’m pretty proud of myself! This place is such a good place. You really are saving lives, families, and children.”

Dustin’s Story

Dustin calls his former life of addiction “one of despair.”  He knew something needed to change, but didn’t think it was possible.

At Hope Mission, he began the recovery process by joining Breakout, Hope Mission’s year-long addiction recovery program for men. Each day he receives hot meals, safe shelter and compassionate care.

It made a huge difference.

“I experienced a transformation I couldn’t believe happened. I actually have real joy in my life. I’m a completely different person than I used to be!”
