Desperate parents call us in tears as they face the impossible choice between paying their bills or feeding their families. Kids show up at school with nothing in their lunchbox and try to hide their embarrassment when their stomach grumbles.
When you’re trapped in survival mode every day, you can’t focus on the future. It’s impossible to think beyond the desperate reality of today. That’s certainly how Mike felt when he found himself homeless on the streets of Edmonton, ready to take his own life.
“I had no job, no home, no belongings. I didn’t know where I was going to go or what I was going to do.”
Mike found his way to Hope Mission for a hot meal – just as so many others have done before him since we opened our doors in 1929. As he shared his heartbreaking story with a staff member, Mike was struck by a new feeling: he knew he wasn’t alone.
